Batavia Cosmic Con

We checked out the Batavia Cosmic Con on Saturday the 17th.

Costume Worn: Steampunk Harley Quinn

It was a bit of a disappointment. It was little more than a few local artists and comic book dealers with minimal product on their tables. There were maybe two attendees when we arrived. The only bit of traffic it had was a family of four that came in as we were leaving.

Their facebook really hyped up the cosplay aspect, but there was only one attendee besides me dressed up when I got there. Another was coming in as I left. None of the pictures in the facebook event page reflected the location.

We got to say hi to one of our favorite artists, Will Rod of Creative Zenith, but I spent more time getting into costume than we did browsing the tables.

Was it worth the hour drive and $5 admission? Not really.

Its a shame because the location has potential being between Buffalo and Rochester. There was nothing to draw the cosplay community in. No fan panels, no activities. No reason for it to be a 2 day event.

The same group put on a show in Amherst earlier this year and it had a few more vendors, more attendees, and was one day only.

No pictures. Nothing worth taking. 🙁

When I found out my dad had a heart attack I spent a lot of time frantically looking for numbers to his friends. I had Pandora in the background and this verse popped on when I finally sat down for a break. Its hitting me hard very randomly today. My dad and I listened to a lot of music and it was something we could share easily, even when things weren’t the best between us.

He would share thru text messages links to music videos on youtube. He liked to wait until I was in bed already so I would see them in the morning.

Earlier today a song I loved came on and it was one of the last he sent me. I still remember the conversation we had, how I was supposed to be in bed and why was I up so late lol

Niagara Falls Comic Con Review

Costume Worn: Steampunk Harley Quinn

Just got home from the Niagara Falls Comic Con, which I attended with Bob, one of my BFF and her daughter

It took forever to get in but there were so many lovely people there! I ran into some of my old Toronto con friends that I haven’t seen in literally over a decade <3

Many people, especially kids, loved my costume. Please forward pictures if you took any or if you see them online!

The dealer’s room was huge and I enjoyed seeing the fan “sets” from the various groups. Bob and I spent a lot of time in the Doctor Who one 😀 Daleks + Harley Quinn = Taking over the world! Or at least having fun destroying it! 😀 (see gallery at the end).

The lines for photo ops ran behind due to Kevin Smith. I REALLY wanted to get a Jay and Silent Bob photo op, but it was just too expensive. I would have gotten it if I didn’t have to pay cash on admission for 4 people 🙁 That would be my ONLY complaint. I had intended to use a CC for the admissions but was told it was not available. Kind of sad that the little food carts had CC machines, but not so much as a Square reader at admission 🙁

Of course, there was a real reason why I wanted to go – to meet one of my favorite Doctors, Paul McGann <3. When he has to stand back and admire your costume, you know you done good. *insert Fangirl Squee* When I saw him on the guest list, I told Bob we were going. No hesitation, no room to argue.

I would definitely travel through all of time and space with him 😀

SH & The No-Good, Very Bad, Sewing Machine

Many years ago, my gramma who noticed my hand sewing decided to get me a sewing machine. Neither one of us not knowing any better, it turned out to be possessed and I threw it back in the closet.

That was 2000. It came with me on multiple moves, because one day I knew would conquer this evil demon. Also, I am probably a borderline hoarder. WHICH HAS COME IN HANDY lately >.>

An expected loss of my job made me re-evaluate myself and let me come back to the things I love, creating and cosplay being just a couple of them.

I dusted out the demonic sewing machine and asked a friend who had some experience to help me out. She helped me confirm that the main problem was the bobbin. I just didn’t know enough to know how it was goofy. We set that right and I went on my merry way sewing simple things.

Another friend of mine turned out to be a sewing guru and we quickly made a play date. We determined that my machine was NOT new when I got it, as we found fabric I never used in the bobbin bay. She also diagnosed a whole slew of problems with the machine that one so little used should have. It explained the issues I had been having. With my dear husband’s blessing, I ordered a new machine.

While I am still figuring things out on it, it was SO amazing to have a machine that doesn’t poo on itself every 3^rd stitch ^_^

I tried to give the demonic sewing machine away, but no one wanted it. I considered going full Office Space on it, but I’m pretty sure that it would come back and haunt me. Much like Japanese horror movie remake, I feel I must give it away to some unsuspecting person. I donated to a local Savers and hope never to see it again.
